In December, the company acquired privately held storage software vendor NVELO, Inc. for $10 million. According to Samsung, the acquisition will expand its R&D operation. In addition, it will focus on software for intelligently managing the storage subsystems of its next-generation solid state drives. In Santa Clara, California, NVELO will be incorporated into the Samsung R&D operation.
Samsung has also entered the car industry with its own automobile brand, Renault Samsung Motors. This has been in operation since 1994 and has developed into a full-range of cars. The company has a total of 19.9 percent ownership of the automobile brand. It also has a 9.6 percent share in Seagate Technology.
After Lee Byung-chul passed away in 1987, his children continued the business. Samsung Electronics was separated into five business groups: consumer electronics, home appliances, mobile devices, telecommunications and industrial equipment. The company has received child labor complaints in the past. In order to ensure that its employees comply with the government’s child labor laws, Samsung maintains a zero tolerance policy.
